40th Anniversary Surprise Party!!!!

Pretty amazing that it has been 40 years since the day we got married at the Andover Inn (8/26/72). Catherine and Scott threw a lovely surprise anniversary party for us at Four Seasons Golf Course--where we play golf--in a pretty room overlooking the course. Apparently, the easiest thing about the surprise party was fooling us. We never saw it coming!
There was a slide show of our lives created by Catherine. And Scott gave a humerous talk about his life with us. Neil and I are so proud of them for putting it all together and so happy that they wanted to do it. We are grateful for all those who could attend and especially for those who traveled so far (MA, NC, DE, MD, NJ, NY, and the winners--Seattle, WA!) The Brother Fish (my high school friends) sang a song written by Caryl Finn to the tune of "One Fine Day" by the Chiffons. It was the icing on the cake.

Tom's 60th Birthday Weekend

Yes, it's official: Tom Maker is now an old codger. We celebrated his 60th birthday at Ted & Joyce's Bay house in Bozman, Maryland the weekend of May 19-21. Ted and Joyce were wonderful hosts who created a matrix that kept us all busy and well fed. It was a great time!
There was a beautiful sunset on Saturday night. The I Fly is shown here on its lift.
Ted made a fire in the fire pit to keep the pests away. Obviously it didn't work.
Getting pre-sailing instructions from Captain Ted. Why is he the only one wearing a life jacket?
A rare photo of Neil on a bicycle
Tom (w/ helmet), Ted, and Joyce discussing the next step on the matrix at Nesbitt Point.

Oh, no! A crab got Tom!

40th Bates Reunion

Gathering for the alumni parade

Nancy, Loel, Beth, Steph

Our class received many compliments for our salmon-colored oxford shirts. Thank you to Suzanne Woods Kelly and the reunion committee. The balloons were very well-coordinated too. The good news was that it didn't rain until after the parade.

Picnic Lunch

Neil and Beth on a tour of Hedge and Roger Bill

There was an "official" tour of these dorms which have been renovated into office and classroom buildings. But we went on the Bruce Damon tour. His company installed the heating and cooling, and he gave us the real story. The guys tried to figure out where their rooms used to be in Roger Bill.

Carol, Helen, and Susie

On Sunday, we gathered at Marcia and Bruce's house with people who did not go to the official reunion. As Marcia said, "here's where we got down to another layer of conversation."

Warren, Peggy and Carolyn

Warren and Peggy came all the way from Montana. Neil's roommate, Ken Johnson, came from California. Carolyn Russell Locke is a published poet. I am reading her book of poetry, and it is wonderful.

All of us except for some of us at Marcia's
